  1. THE POSTER PROGRAM.

  5. INTRODUCTION.
  6.  
  7. This program has been designed to let you easily and quickly create large 
  8. posters and signs, printing them at up to 10 times the size of a single sheet.
  9.  
  10. The program was originally created to allow my daughter to generate large 
  11. posters for use in presentations for her 4-H club.  The posters are text and 
  12. graphics.  After creating a poster, she prints in double size (4 sheets of paper) 
  13. and pastes it onto a poster board.  For a typical presentation, she will use six to 
  14. ten posters.

  16. This program is "Freely Distributed". The author has given permission for the file 
  17. to be distributed without restriction, but does not permit alterations to the file.

  19. ADVANTAGES OF POSTER.
  20.  
  21. This program is very easy to use, and it is very simple to create large posters.  It 
  22. is especially useful when you have a number of fonts installed, as the font 
  23. selection menu displays renditions of all the true-type fonts. The final poster size 
  24. is fully configurable.

  26. VERSION 1.2 IMPROVEMENTS.

  28. The program has been greatly improved in the areas of:
  29.    printer support (now supports almost every windows printer), 
  30.    font support (supports more than 48 fonts, and color)
  31.    graphics support (supports metafiles as pictures and borders).

  46. INSTALLATION.
  47.  
  48. If you have unzipped the files, then you have practically installed the program.  
  49. The package consists of the following files:
  50. 1. This README file.
  51. 2. POSTER.TXT, which is  the documentation for POSTER.  All of this 
  52. documentation is also in the on-line help file.
  53. 3. POSTER.EXE, which is the poster program itself.
  54. 4. POSTER.HLP, which is the on-line help file.

  56. To install the program, do the following after unzipping the poster download file:
  57. 1. Create a directory called POSTER.
  58. 2. Copy the files POSTER.TXT, POSTER.EXE, and POSTER.HLP into that 
  59. directory.
  60. 3. Create a program manager icon for POSTER by doing the following:
  61.     a. Select the program manager group where you want the icon.
  62.     b. Select NEW.
  63.     c. Select Program Item.
  64.     d. In the dialog box, fill in Description ("Poster"), 
  65.             The command line: C:\poster\poster.exe
  66.         The working directory: C:\poster
  67.          If you have unzipped into a different directory, use it instead of 
  68.     c:\poster.
  69.  4. You may view and print the documentation file, POSTER.TXT, with notepad.
  70.       However, this entire document is included in the online help file.

  72. USING POSTER.
  73.  
  74. To start using poster, simply double click on the poster icon.  POSTER will start 
  75. and present an empty page to you.  Just start typing to begin making your 
  76. poster.

  78. You can also associate "POS" file types with poster (do this with File Manager).  
  79. Then, double clicking on a POS file will automatically start poster with that file.

  82. PRINTERS.
  83.  
  84. This program has been successfully tested on the following printers: 
  85.     HP Laserjet II and compatibles
  86.     HP Laserjet III - see special setup instructions below.
  87.             HP LaserJet 4 - See special setup instructions below
  88.     HP DeskJet PLUS
  89.     HP DeskJet 500
  90.     Epson dot matrix and compatibles
  91.     Postscript printer - See special setup instructions below
  92. If you cannot get POSTER to work properly on your printer, try checking the box 
  93. marked "Method A" in the PRINT dialog box. This should work ALL printers (but 
  94. not plotters).  If this still doesn't work, try "Method B" and "Method C".  Also, see 
  95. the special setup instructions below.

  97. Note: Color text does not print properly on Tektronic Phaser printers.

  100. LASERJET III USERS.
  101. If the posters you print are missing characters at page edges, then do the 
  102. following:
  103. 1. Select "Method A" in the Poster Print Dialog box.  Also, be sure your printer is 
  104. set to 300 dpi.
  105.  
  106. LASERJET 4 USERS.
  107. To successfully print posters, you must configure your printer as follows:
  108. 1. Select "Printer Setup":
  109. 2. Set resolution to 300 dpi. (At 600dpi, printing takes a very long time, and may 
  110. hang the printer.)
  111. 3. Select "options". 
  112. 4. Select "Graphics Mode" = "raster", "Graphics Quality"="high", and
  113.      check "print true-type as graphics".
  114. If posters still do not print properly, then in the PRINT dialog box, check the 
  115. boxed marked "Method A". This should always work.

  117. POSTSCRIPT PRINTER USERS.
  118. If you get postscript errors, or you are loosing characters at page boundaries:
  119. 1. From the control panel, select Printers, then select 'Setup.
  120. 2. Select "options", then select "advanced".
  121. 3. Select "print true type fonts as" "Bitmap (type 3)".
  122. 4. Close the control panel.
  123. 5. Start POSTER.
  124. If posters still do not print properly, or print too slow, then in the PRINT dialog 
  125. box, check the boxed marked "Method A". This should always work.
